Kemi Adebantu look at the dark clouds gathering at sky with a feeling of anticipation. It is about to rain in her one acre farm in Alamala, Ogun state Nigeria, that desperately needs it. The previous months has been dry, a strange occurrence during the peak of the rainy season, but in just the past few days, the skies have started opening up again. Kemi’s maize crops are still maturing, and they may be able to escape permanent damage, as long as the rains continue through the rest of the next month.

“Two or three weeks without rain would have been worse,” says, a single mother who supports a family of five with the income from her small farm. “Now, we just pray that the harvest will be enough.”

Uncertainty is a feeling that Kemi has gotten used to, because it’s the Fourth consecutive year that weather problems have threatened her family’s livelihood. Last year, her harvest was smaller than normal because the rains arrived later than expected.

“My whole life growing up, the rains always came at a certain time,” Kemi remembers. “The weather is more difficult to predict now than before.

It is no longer news how climate change is affecting African farmers most especially West and East Africa leading to food insecurity and lower source of income for small holder farmers . No one knows for sure what impact this will have on future food supplies, but models by the International Food Policy Research Institute estimate that global maize production could shrink 24 percent by 2050.
